WhatsApp Business API Pricing in India, Line by Line

Platform fees, Meta's per-message charges, hidden markups and the real monthly cost of WhatsApp automation for a typical Indian SMB, with example budgets.

WhatsApp API pricing confuses everyone, because you’re paying two or three parties at once and some providers blur the lines deliberately. Here’s the whole bill, itemised.

The three layers of cost

Layer 1: Meta (WhatsApp itself). Meta charges per message, by category. It moved from per-conversation to per-message billing in July 2025, and it revises the India rates periodically. These are current as of July 2026, after the January 2026 increase:

Message typeApprox. cost (India)Examples
Marketing~₹0.86 per messageOffers, broadcasts, promotions
Utility~₹0.115 per messageOrder updates, reminders, confirmations
Service (24-hr window)FreeReplies to a customer within 24h of their message

That last row is the one to design around. Conversations customers start are essentially free for a full 24 hours. Good automation maximises free service conversations and reserves paid marketing messages for campaigns that earn their cost.

Marketing messages cost roughly seven times what utility messages do, which is why the category your template gets approved under matters more to your bill than your message volume does.

Layer 2: The platform (BSP). You access the API through a Meta-authorised platform, which gives you the dashboard, flow builder, team inbox and broadcast tools. All three of the main Indian options have a free tier. Paid plans, from their own pricing pages in July 2026: AiSensy ₹2,500 or ₹3,500 a month, Interakt ₹2,799 or ₹3,799, and Wati starting at a ₹999 one-time pay-as-you-go credit before its subscription tiers. Higher enterprise plans run well above these.

Which one to pick is a separate question from what it costs, and the platform fee turns out to be the least important part of the bill. We compared them properly in AiSensy vs Wati vs Interakt.

Watch for markup here. Some providers add 10-30% on top of Meta’s per-message rates without saying so. Ask directly: “Do you charge Meta’s conversation rates at cost, or with a margin?” A provider that won’t answer plainly has answered.

Layer 3: Implementation. Someone has to design the flows, write the messages, connect your catalogue and CRM, apply for green-tick verification, and train your team. Done properly this is a one-time ₹15,000-₹50,000 depending on complexity. Done badly, it’s free and worth exactly that.

And the layer nobody quotes: GST. 18% applies on both Meta’s charges and your platform fee. Any monthly figure quoted to you without it understates your real cost by nearly a fifth.

What a typical SMB actually spends

A clinic doing bookings and reminders:

  • Platform: ~₹2,500/month
  • Messages: mostly utility plus free service windows, so ~₹500-1,500/month at moderate volume
  • Running cost: roughly ₹3,000-4,000/month after one-time setup

A D2C brand doing order updates plus two marketing campaigns a month to a 5,000-person opted-in list:

  • Platform: ~₹3,000/month
  • Utility messages: ~₹1,000/month
  • Marketing: 10,000 messages at ~₹0.85 comes to ~₹8,500/month
  • Running cost: roughly ₹12,000-13,000/month

That last number sounds like a lot until you compare the conversion rate against the same spend on ads pointing at a website form.

The question that actually decides your budget

Not “which platform is cheapest” but “what does one converted customer earn me?” If your average customer is worth ₹2,000 or more, WhatsApp automation pays for itself with a handful of conversions a month. Those are the conversions your unanswered 11 pm enquiries currently lose.

We set all of this up with the full maths shown before you commit: platform fees, Meta rates at cost, and our setup fee, on separate lines. Details on the WhatsApp automation page, or read the complete automation guide first.
